Week of March 9, 2014

Literacy - We focused on the letter Uu, and the shape of the letter. We worked on recognizing words with U sounds, and learned vocabulary words; umbrella, under, up, uniform. We made umbrellas using paper plates and straws. We painted pictures using q-tips, and made dinosaur skeletons using q-tips as well.
Sight words: the, see, is, here, I, a, up, go
Numeracy - This week we focused on measurement again. The students were able to measure things with yarn, cube, links, paperclips, as well as use themselves. The students loved measuring things around the class using different lengths of yarn. The students also liked measuring dinosaur shaped bones using big counting circles. We were able to fit 100 counting circles in one of the cutouts.
Science -  We discussed energy again and sang a song about push and pull. The students were asked to push and pull objects, and determine if an object needed to be pushed or pulled. We also made actions for pushing and pulling.

Reading and Writing - We read a story called The Big Turnip which tied in with our science unit of energy. The students were asked talk about the pictures, and predict what they see happening in the story. The students were able to act out the story using masks, which they loved.
Next week we are focusing on:
Literacy: letter Jj
Mathematics: Number line to 20, counting forwards and backwards, number sense
Science: Energy (home and school)
Theme: Dinosaurs

**If possible could you please send your child to school with some oranges so we could make juice for the letter Jj. Thank you in advance!
