Week of April 20th 2014

Literacy - We focused on the letter Yy, and the shape of the letter. The students made pictures with yarn, and painted with yarn instead of using brushes. We worked on recognizing words with Y sounds, and learned vocabulary words;yellow, yarn, yo-yo, yak, yacht, yogurt, yum, yuck, you, yell.
Sight words: the, see, is, here, I, a, up, my, like, little

Here are some online resources for sight words, also known as high frequency words:
Sight Word Game
Numeracy - We focused on ordinal numbers and reviewed counting. We raced in class, and wrote down who came 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. The students loved racing each other, and after the first race the class was guessing who was going to be in first place. The class also arranged letters of the alphabet in order and guessed which letters were 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Most of the class still needs help with ordinal numbers, which I will continue to review next week.
Science - We discussed properties of matter (solid, liquid, and gas). The students made ice cream which showed how liquids turned into solids. The class loved shaking the ingredients together to make the ice cream. We also put balloons on soda bottles to show how the gas from the soda could blow up the balloons. Some other things we did was soak hard boiled eggs in soda, and brushed them with toothbrushes to show the effect of sugar. We also made letters and shapes out of flour, salt, and water.
