Week of February 16, 2014

Literacy - We focused on the letter Hh, and the shape of the letter. We worked on recognizing words with H sounds, and learned vocabulary words; horse, hammer, house, hug, hello, hamburger, henna, hand, hair, head, hotdog.

Numeracy - We focused on subtraction by taking a whole group and taking away from it. We made number stories using a group of caterpillars, and a bird coming along and eating some. We used the words take away, group, minus, subtraction, how many left, left over. The students were having trouble with this concept and subtraction will be reviewed this coming week.

Science - We discussed energy forms and the differences between plants and animals. We made lists of what animals need (shelter, food, water, air) and what plants need (soil, space, air, light, water).

Reading and Writing - We read a story called Splash! The students were asked to recall what happened in the story. We talked about the characters and what they did in the story. The students focused the changes in weather in the story.
